It’s official! Today Mississippi State earned the highest score of 844 out of a possible 1000 points and placed first in the 2010 EcoCAR Year Two Finals in San Diego this morning!  Their exceptionally designed extended-range electric (EREV) vehicle utilizes biodiesel, UQM electric motors, and a battery pack provided by A123 Systems.  Huge congratulations are also due to second-place winner Virginia Technological Institute, and third-place winner Pennsylvania State University.

Mississippi State University's EcoCAR team accepts top honors at San Diego House of Blues today

“I’m really glad to see that all our hard work and dedication paid off in the end,” said Ryan Williams, mechanical team leader for Mississippi State’s team. “Being in a competition of this caliber is an honor in itself, and we are thrilled to be a part of it. The competition is really stiff.”

“I am unbelievably proud of these young people,” said Dr. Marshall Molen, Faculty Advisor for the Mississippi State team. “The professionalism they have demonstrated and the engineering aptitude they showed during the competition clearly distinguishes them from the other teams, it’s not a surprise that they have excelled to where they are today.”

During the awards ceremony, Karl Strake, VP for Global Development at General Motors also addressed the teams. “When I look at the team members during this competition, I see passion in their eyes,” said Strake. “That is what we need in this industry, and for the future of automobiles.

Right after the ceremony at San Diego’s House of Blues, we grabbed MSU team member Thomas Goddette to get his reaction to taking the top prize:

Green Garage: It’s been a long two weeks. Pick three words to describe how you’re feeling right now.

Thomas Goddette: “Excited. Relieved. Tired.”

GG: What’s going to happen in the next 24 hours?

TG: “We’re all going to crash, but there may be some celebrating later.”

GG: You’ve conquered this year. What’s next? How will you do it again?

TG: “The great thing about Yuma was that we were able to build and test vehicle at same time we were learning about what we needed to improve upon. During the past week, we discovered strengths and faults of the vehicle, what we needed to focus on and what we don’t need to focus on for Year Three. That will help us.”

GG: The green aspects of your car are incredible. It gets an electric range of 60 miles and 118 miles per gallon gas equivalent (combined city/highway cycle). How did you do it?

TG: “To start, the months leading up finals have been crazy and we used every moment of free time to get the vehicle where we wanted to be. We logged a lot of hours at CAVS, our ‘green garage.’ But I’d say we reached our fuel economy and consumption goals with an expert control strategy and a focus on picking the right components to do the job we needed the vehicle to do.”

GG: What’s your secret weapon?

TG: “The support of school. The university as whole has been really supportive and Professor Marshall Molen, our faculty advisor, was a huge help. Bill Beggs from GM, who is our mentor, was also great. Without the help from them, we couldn’t do what we did today.  It’s a great feeling to know that we won but it’s the competition from the other schools that keep us on our toes and looking forward to next year.”

It’s EcoCAR Day Seven and teams continue giving their outreach presentations today.  The teams are presenting details of how they have promoted their prototype EcoCAR vehicles as well as other outreach activities they have executed over the past year.

Between blogs, streaming video, tweet updates, Facebook groups and other forms of social media, students have been working hard to communicate messages about energy efficiency and advanced vehicle technologies to the public.

Another way the teams are reaching out is by visiting local schools and youth groups.  Mississippi State University developed close relationships with several of their local schools, even scheduling return visits to update the kids about their vehicle’s progress as well as educate them about energy-related issues throughout the school year.

In addition to youth outreach, many teams invited influencers within their community to learn about their project and the EcoCar Challenge.  Missouri S&T has had several visits from their Congressman and they plan to continue their relationship with her to further promote interest in advanced vehicle technology.

Students are anxiously preparing to present to eleven judges in this category, all of whom are from EcoCAR sponsor organizations.  Most of these individuals work in the Marketing and Communications departments within their company and bring not only experience to this competition, but also a great knowledge of outreach efforts.

Many students who work on outreach for the teams are Public Relations or Marketing majors.  The competition is invaluable as a learning process and experience for their futures in the field, just as the Engineering majors are gaining valuable experience from the technical side of the competition.  Even for the Engineering students, learning how to successfully market their vehicle is a great tool for future products they may develop.

EcoCAR outreach presentations continue through Day 7.

Engineering presentations also begin today in electrical, mechanical, and control strategies. It’s a big day for the students, and there are a lot of points on the line. Good luck teams!

Last night was a nice break from the chaos of the competition. Teams, faculty and organizers were treated to a dinner cruise aboard Lord Hornblower!  The boat departed around 6:30pm, just in time for a beautiful sunset and scenic views of the San Diego Harbor.

Students enjoyed their temporary downtime by relaxing with an evening filled with dinner, music and fun.  With delicious food and drinks, ocean air, and no evaluations or testing, this was a wonderful treat for the students, organizers and sponsors.

While everyone mixed and mingled, some students discussed upcoming events and others shared stories of the victories and triumphs they’ve encountered during the competition. Most of the teams have been working on their projects for months and don’t often get a chance to spend time with other competitors with whom they share a common ground.

Competition finals allow the teams to not only meet face-to-face, but share valuable insights with each other about what they’ve learned and how they’ve dealt with difficult situations. Here students can build lifelong friendships and networks that they will draw on in their future careers.  Last night’s cruise provided just that opportunity, while also rejuvenating teams and faculty for the second leg of the competition.

EcoCAR students, sponsors and organizers all took in the gorgeous view of San Diego Harbor on Monday night.

Our time at the General Motors Desert Proving Ground in Yuma was tough, but fantastic! The teams worked around the clock to cycle their vehicles through different tests and even make some changes along the way – and now their work is nearly done!

We are headed to sunny California for the last leg of the EcoCAR Year Two Finals where teams will show the judges their static presentations and we’ll announce the 2010 winners of the competition!

Check out the video below of the teams wrapping up in Yuma and starting their journey to San Diego. See you there!

Each team is unique, from vehicle architectures to outreach strategies, and the same holds true for the exterior design of their vehicles. Even at this early prototype stage of vehicle development, many of the EcoCARs are custom-painted and personalized with images of the schools’ mascots and EcoCAR logos.

Embry-Riddle’s vehicle features a vinyl wrap with a beautiful design. It has a grass lining on the bottom that fades into a blue sky with clouds and a starry sky.  The team says their design illustrates how energy can be found in all areas of our universe.  But this stellar wrap wasn’t designed by professional graphic artists, the team’s wrap was designed and applied by a member of the EcoCAR team – just one more example of how EcoCAR is truly a multi-disciplinary project.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology who is the only fully-functional electric vehicle features an “electrifying” design with lightning bolts across the car and a giant electric plug over the rear quarter panel. The team which is from Ontario, Canada painted a giant maple leaf on the roof of the vehicle.

The Rose-Hulman team was preparing to compete in the desert when they painted their vehicle. And what better design for the desert than camouflage, of course! If it wasn’t for the sponsor logos on the vehicle, it might just fade into the scenic Arizona landscape.

Texas Tech showed off their Texas pride with their vehicle design. A massive Texas flag covered the roof of the car and was incorporated into the Chevy emblem on the front and rear of the vehicle. The vehicle also featured some special custom badges such as “Chevrolet EcoCAR” on the rear and “Texas Edition” (with a star in the name) on the side panels.

The EcoCAR Mentors from General Motors judged all of the vehicles designs yesterday. Which one do you think they will pick to will win the award for “Best Vehicle Appearance?”  Get an up-close look at the 16 EcoCARs in the slideshow below and pick your favorite design.

It’s very early morning; so early that the sun hasn’t risen, the birds aren’t awake, and the first pot of coffee hasn’t been brewed. It’s far earlier than most people are awake, but this morning one group of students are up and in high gear, checking their vehicles for any last-minute needed changes.

This morning several teams will run emissions tests on their vehicles, and it’s best done early in the morning, before the desert sun comes out and makes the air too warm. At 3:30 am engineers from General Motors, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Argonne National Laboratory instrument the EcoCAR vehicles with SEMTECH mobile emissions analyzers from Sensors, Inc. And by 4:00 AM the Penn State team arrive to watch the GM driver take their vehicle for the 100 mile test drive around a circle track. Marty Lechner, Derek Bailey, and Ben Koch are team members from Penn State who arrive early along with the team from Virginia Tech to watch their vehicles from the side of the track as they compete in the event.  Marty, a PSU mechanical engineering major, yawns; but he admits that the excitement of seeing his vehicle  participate in the event, and a little caffeine, helped wake him up.

Today’s testing went well. The Penn State vehicle ran on all electric for the first 30 miles before switching to the engine and they expect to see good results.  As the last teams participate in emissions, others are packing up and getting ready for the drive to San Diego, where the spotlight will be off the vehicles on onto the students as they present their static presentations for the judges.

Sixteen North American university teams, advanced technology vehicles, fierce rivalry, more than a dozen technical events, and one very large desert.

This has been the EcoCar: The Next Challenge 2010 competition FINALS!

Beginning today, the EcoCAR teams move out of the desert and on to San Diego. Teams are gearing up for the second stage  of the competition, where they will give presentations in the mechanical, electrical, controls, and outreach categories to panels of expert  judges. Many engineering students consider this part of the competition the most difficult time – when they have to put down the tools, put on a tie, and give a PowerPoint presentation. But they know it’ll all be worth it when the final awards ceremony is held next week at the House of Blues in the San Diego Gaslamp District.

In between the presentations, teams will enjoy a sunset cruise on the beautiful San Diego bay with a chance to wind down with competition sponsors after a grueling week in the desert.  Teams are eager to put the sleepless nights and grueling stress of the vehicle testing events and presentation behind them if just for a night to enjoy San Diego with sponsors and their fellow competitors.  Unfortunately, it will be back to work on Tuesday when the presentation events resume.

After an exhausing week in Yuma, teams will get a chance to relax a little in San Diego before the competition kicks back into high gear.
